LondonSOUP2: Oct 10, 2013 – Winner: St Andrew Memorial Community Garden

Our 2nd sustainable business microfunder was held Thursday, October 10, at Saffron’s Restaurant at Fanshawe College, London. We received positive feedback and words of encouragement at the event and would like to thank everyone for your continued support. Information on our 3rd LondonSOUP event, slated for early next year will follow.

The winning concept as voted by attendees was Rev. Marty Levesque with the St Andrew Memorial Community Garden. Rev. Levesque has posted information on the award here

The garden opened in 2011 as an outreach project of St Andrew Memorial Anglican Church, where the church community offers garden plots to area residence regardless of church affiliation or denomination at little to no cost.

The garden project helps area residence grow their own food and promotes healthy lifestyles and healthy communities by:

  • Lowering the carbon footprint of the gardeners
  • Connecting people with the environment and each other
  • Reduces exposer of pesticides through food
  • Promoting physical activity
    • One plot in the garden is kept in reserve for the church community itself where fresh produce is grown for the Fellowship Centre, the Anglican Church’s daily soup kitchen run out of St Paul’s Cathedral. This past growing season saw over 200 lbs of fresh produced delivered to the soup kitchen, providing often overlooked but necessary nutrition to some of the most vulnerable in London Ontario.

      Next LondonSOUP

Our next LondonSOUP micro-funder will be held in early 2014, date/location TBD. The SOUP concept is gaining recognition here and internationally. Our humble group of SOUPstir’s was recently asked to share (& have) our Meet. Persuade. Discuss. Vote. Eat. mantra with our London, England sisters & brothers (Twitter: @SoupLondonUK).

The London Community Foundation has recently offered support as our volunteer driven, local, sustainability activities are in keeping with their organizational goals & objectives (some of us met via their local food conference last year).

But we will need additional SOUPstirs to assist going forward. If you have a sincere interest in our activities and would like to give us a hand on the planning or organising of future events, please let us know by contacting us at the ‘Contact Organizer’ link at the most recent event.
